% NASA selects investigators for new TIMED mission;

% STS-51 pre-flight press briefings.
NASA recently selected nine principal investigators to provide experiments for
a new mission to study the elusive uppermost layers of the Earth's atmosphere.
Six investigators were selected as well to study problems using data from two
or more of the experiments. TIMED is currently under consideration as a new
start candidate.
The new mission, called TIMED (Thermosphere- Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics
and Dynamics), will study the atmospheric regions that lie roughly between 40
to 110 miles (60 and 180 kilometers) above the Earth;s surface. TIMED consists
of two almost identical spacecraft in different circular Earth orbits. The
spacecraft will be launch aboard small expendable launch vehicles.
The TIMED mission is the first of a so-called "intermediate" series of space
physics missions characterized by having tightly controlled, pre- determined
budget caps and a set of science objectives to be accomplished in a
pre-specified lifetime. The TIMED mission is planned to have a nominal
lifetime of 2 years

The NOAA-I launch previously scheduled for July 13 has been rescheduled for
July 21. Launch of the weather satellite was rescheduled because of a failure
in the Redundant Crystal Oscillator. The oscillator is a timing device that
regulates activities aboard the spacecraft. Technicians plan to install a new
unit. The new launch time will be 6:02 a.m. EDT and the launch window is 10
minutes.
